How to put fractions on the number line?
Placing fractions on a number line is a great way to visualize their values and compare them.
- Set up the number line:
Draw a line and mark 0 and 1 at its endpoints.
Divide the space between 0 and 1 into as many equal intervals as there are units in the denominator of the fraction you want to represent. For example, if your fraction has a denominator of 4, divide the line into 4 equal intervals.
- Locate the numerator:
Count the number of intervals indicated by the numerator of the fraction. For example, if your fraction is 3/4, count 3 intervals from 0.
- Mark the point:
Place a mark on the line at the end of the counted intervals. This represents the location of your fraction.
- If the fraction is greater than 1, extend the number line beyond 1 and repeat the process: divide the extended line into the same number of intervals as the denominator and mark the corresponding point based on the numerator.
